There are vacations, and then there are trips that stay with you long after you get home. Last June, my wife and I got to experience one of those, traveling through London and Ireland. London: Art, Wonder & West End Magic
From the moment we touched down in London, the city's energy pulled us in. We made Hammersmith our home base — its mix of local cafes, shops, and easy Tube access made it the perfect launch point for exploring. There's a specific thrill to surfacing from the underground right in the heart of iconic London, or gliding along the Thames on a quiet river cruise, watching centuries-old landmarks slip by.
But the real highlight was the National Gallery. Surrounded by Michelangelo, Van Gogh, and Monet, I felt like a kid again. That evening we saw Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty's Theatre, and it was every bit as powerful as its reputation — the kind of show that makes you understand why it's still running decades later.
When Travel Throws Curveballs
No real adventure comes without a hitch. Our London-to-Dublin flight got canceled at the last moment — a traveler's rite of passage. Even as a travel advisor, moments like that remind me that flexibility and calm communication are your best tools. The airline rebooked us quickly and arranged a hotel, and soon we were bound for Ireland, turning a setback into a memorable detour instead of a ruined day.
Falling in Love With Ireland
Arriving in Dublin, everything felt different — maybe it was the history, maybe our own family ties to the land, or maybe just the friendly buzz of the city. We started with a visit to the Jameson Distillery, learning the story behind one of Ireland's most famous whiskeys. That night, a Celtic Nights dinner show at the Arlington Hotel had us singing and laughing alongside fellow travelers, and it set the tone for the rest of the trip.
On the Road: The Heart of Ireland
Athlone & Sean's Bar. There's a unique thrill to sipping a Guinness in the world's oldest pub, feeling centuries of stories in the air.
Galway's old streets. Lively markets, medieval walls, and a treasure trove of local art and jewelry.
Connemara's wild roads. Sheepdogs working the fields, a hearty lamb stew at Kylemore Abbey, and endless, breathtaking landscapes.
Cliffs of Moher. Standing atop these cliffs with the wild Atlantic below is visceral and humbling in a way photos never quite capture.
Killarney & Celtic Steps. Live music, world-class dancing, and a dusk walk in Killarney National Park where Irish legends feel close enough to touch.
Ring of Kerry. Stops at the Kerry Bog Village and Waterville, where the Atlantic meets the land and stories of Charlie Chaplin still linger.
Kilkenny Castle. For me, this one was personal — knowing my ancestors once walked these halls made it feel like a return to roots rather than just another stop.
The People and the Food
Ireland's real magic is in its people and its food. Every meal was good, and my wife — who's gluten-free — found safe, satisfying options everywhere we went. Local chefs, pub owners, and market vendors treated us like old friends, always ready with a story, a tip, or a smile. Music is everywhere — fiddles, street performers, impromptu songs breaking out in pubs. You don't just watch it happen; you get pulled into it.
Why We'll Return Again and Again
Ireland leaves an imprint. Whether it's the wild sight of the Cliffs of Moher, music echoing through cobblestone streets, or the kindness of strangers, it's the kind of place you carry home with you. Almost a year later, we're still talking about that trip, and we already know we'll be back.
