Why September Is the Travel Advisor's Favorite Month to Send Clients Abroad

Every advisor has a favorite month, and mine isn't close.

It's not June, when everyone's chasing summer. It's not December, when the "new year, new me" inquiries start rolling in. It's September — quietly, consistently, the best month I get to hand someone their boarding pass.

Here's why I look forward to it every single year.

The Crowds Leave, the Good Stuff Doesn't

Kids go back to school. Summer vacationers go back to their routines. And almost overnight, the places that were packed in July start to breathe again.

Same destination. Same hikes, same wine regions, same coastal towns. Just without the lines, the sold-out restaurants, or the tour bus parked in every photo.

I've sent clients to Italy in September who walked into vineyards that were shoulder-to-shoulder with tourists two months earlier — and had the place practically to themselves. Same goes for Ireland's coastal drives, Croatia's islands, and half of Western Europe. The scenery doesn't change. The experience does.

The Weather Actually Cooperates

This is the part nobody markets enough: September weather across most of Europe and the Mediterranean is often better than peak summer. You lose the brutal heat, keep the long daylight, and get comfortable enough to actually enjoy a full day outside instead of hiding from the sun between 1 and 4pm.

It's the sweet spot — warm enough to swim, cool enough to hike, and rarely the kind of heat that turns a "relaxing trip" into a survival mission.

Prices Drop the Second the Calendar Flips

Airlines and hotels price to demand, and demand drops hard right after Labor Day. That means:

  • Flights that were inflated all summer suddenly loosen up

  • Hotels and resorts offer better rates for the same rooms

  • River and ocean cruise lines run some of their best late-season promotions of the year

I'm not saying September is "cheap." I'm saying your money goes noticeably further than it did in July, without sacrificing quality or timing.

It's the Turn — And That's Exactly Why I Love It

Every year, September marks a shift for me. Summer is when everyone travels. September is when the travelers who actually plan ahead start moving — and those are usually my favorite clients to work with. They're not scrambling. They're not settling for whatever's left. They booked early enough to get real options, and now they're reaping the reward: better prices, better weather, better access.

That's the turn nobody talks about. Summer travel is reactive. September travel is intentional.

What I Tell Clients Booking Right Now

If you're weighing a trip for this fall or already eyeing next year, here's what I'm telling people who call me in September:

  • Fall in Europe (September through mid-October) is one of the most underrated windows on the calendar — good weather, real availability, and prices that don't punish you for showing up

  • If you're eyeing a river cruise, this is prime harvest season along the Rhine, Danube, and Douro — the itineraries are often built around it

  • Waiting until October or November to book a fall trip usually means chasing availability instead of choosing it

  • If a big 2027 trip is on your radar, September is genuinely one of the best months to start locking in flights and accommodations before winter pricing shifts again

The Takeaway

September doesn't get the hype that June or December do. It should. It's the month where the trips are better, the crowds are gone, and the travelers who show up made the smart call instead of the easy one.

If you've been sitting on a trip idea, this is your sign. Let's talk about where September — or next fall — could take you.
